Rise to four stars in the Falstaff Wine Guide 2025

"The Markgräflerland has been on a roll for a few years now - global warming is clearly helping. But the interaction between the experienced generation and the young generation also seems to be driving many businesses forward, including Ulrich Bernhart's winery, where his daughter Johanna is now playing an increasingly active role. The wines have always been known for their subtle freshness and substantial delicacy. But now the quality seems to have taken another leap forward. We're jumping on board and giving the business a fourth star. Congratulations!"

Vinum Wine Guide 2025

"One is almost tempted to speak of 'habit' when Johanna and Ulrich Bernhart's collection boasts more than half of the wines with over 90 points. But this time the two of them are upping the ante. Sure, you could say that this is due to the special 2022 vintage, from which almost half of the wines come - but that would only be half the truth. Because in fact, here - and also in the following 2023 vintage - the meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar is paying off. It goes without saying that the Gutedel from the Erste Lage Kracher is a speciality, which once again confirms its exceptional status. Our tip this time is the animating Sauvignon Blanc. It is not just its skilfully balanced varietal typicality, but above all its
Freshness and excitement that please."

Baden Winery of the Year - Vinum Wine Guide 2023

“…If more than half of a dozen submitted samples receive at least 90 points, you have to take your hat off . The two Gutedels are in a class of their own, which of course is especially true for the Kracher – growing and vinifying it in a prime location shows courage…”

We are very pleased to be awarded the title “ Baden Winery of the Year ” in the latest edition of the Vinum Wine Guide , as well as being promoted to 3.5 stars.

“The title of “Baden Winery of the Year” was awarded to the private winery Schlumberger-Bernhart, which has made the leap to the top with its current wine collection. And, as the editors expressly emphasize, this is not the end of the positive development.”

“What Ulrich Bernhart has once again bottled with razor-sharp precision this year is impressive. Even the simple Gutedel makes it clear where this winery is headed: on the one hand, the wine is really fun and completely uncomplicated to drink, but on the other hand, it is so dry and uncompromising in the glass that even demanding connoisseurs get their money's worth. But there is a second Gutedel this year. It is called Kracher and was created as part of daughter Johanna's bachelor's thesis. Instead of describing the wine, I would just like to ask the young talent: Johanna, please, keep it up. When you get to the Grand Crus in the quality pyramid, you should take your time. Because these are quiet wines that do not reveal their charms to everyone at first. But if you give them a little air, they impress with their delicate spiciness and fine use of wood. As for the red wines: the higher you go in terms of quality, the more shaggy the wines become - in a positive sense. If the estate wine is enjoyable because it is easy to drink, the Große Gewächs has one or two things that you can rub up against. This is enjoyment at a very high level. A great collection with which the winery is on course for star number four.”

“…Ulrich Bernhart works as usual with his usual millimeter-precise precision and meticulousness: The great wines of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir can also hold their own in a supra-regional comparison . A strong performance!…”

Climbers in the Gault&Millau Wine Guide 2024

We are delighted to announce our promotion to 4 grapes in the Gault&Millau Wine Guide 2024.

"At the Schlumberger-Bernhart winery, daughter Johanna has joined the winery after studying viticulture and oenology and gaining experience at home and abroad. She now looks after the vineyard and cellar together with her father Ulrich. Mother Claudia is primarily responsible for the hotel. It is very important to Johanna that the vineyards continue to be managed as naturally as possible. In the cellar, many wines are spontaneously fermented in wooden barrels. The company's focus continues to be on Burgundy varieties and Chasselas."

Our excellent top wines:

**** 2020 Weißburgunder GG KLOSTERWINGERTE “The best wines” in the Weißburgunder category in 1st place

Gourmet- The best wineries 2024

"There are wineries where it is difficult to decide on a recommendation because their collection as a whole is so impressive , and this year that is the case with the Schlumberger-Bernhart winery. Here every wine is a recommendation . The wines are not powerhouses, but finely structured representatives of grape varieties. The winery is great at handling wood, so nothing is too loud, the aromas are perfectly integrated and the wines have a great structure throughout. As an example, we mention the Fumé, which is a prime example of Sauvignon Blanc from the wooden barrel. The Pinot Noir from the monastery vineyard also demonstrates the great handling of wood: It has a delicate aroma of dark cherry, cocoa and cedar wood and a fine tannin structure, yet it is clear and precise - that's fun!"

Vinum Wine Guide 2024

"The Schlumberger-Bernhart winery has been setting standards in the Markgräfler Land for many years. The Burgundy varieties find their own distinctive expression here, and the Gutedel also gains its own profile, especially the Kracher from the Laufener Altenberg."

Our excellent top wines:

93 points – 2021 Grauburgunder GG Klosterwingerte

92 points – 2021 Weißburgunder GG Klosterwingerte

92 points – 2021 Chardonnay GG Klosterwingerte

91 points – Laufener Altenberg Sauvignon Blanc 1G fumé – “Among the TOP 10 in Germany”

90 points – 2020 Spätburgunder S – “ The best Spätburgunders of the growing region up to 16 euros”

Falstaff Wine Guide 2024

"The relatively small vineyard area of ten hectares allows them to carry out all the work themselves, explain Ulrich Bernhart and his daughter Johanna, who share the work in the vineyard and cellar. Sustainability and healthy soils are prerequisites for good terroir wines. These have an unmistakable signature: with a focus on fresh, lean concentration and juiciness. Johanna Bernhart's >Kracher<, a bold interpretation of the Gutedel grape matured in barriques, has once again grown compared to last year."

Our excellent top wines:

92+ points – 2021 Laufener Altenberg Kracher Gutedel 1G

Eichelmann 2024

**** "Excellent winery - The basic line "vom Löss" shows a reliable, high level again this year. (...) The white Großes Gewächs, vintage 2021, which now bear the addition "Klosterwingerte", are very strong again this year. (...) The highlight of the reds is, as usual, the Pinot Noir Großes Gewächs, it shows intense fruit, some floral notes, is full-bodied and powerful, has substance and tannins"

harvest reports

2024 coming soon

2023

Unfortunately, in August this year we were hit hard by hail twice in most of our vineyards. But because the late summer was so dry and warm, most of the damaged berries dried out and were therefore easier to sort out. The hail significantly delayed ripening, which is why we only started harvesting on September 6th, despite the hot year. We were outside every day for almost five weeks with a large team and sorted out extremely carefully - so that only the best grapes made it to the cellar, thanks to our great, experienced harvest team. The first samples show that the effort was once again completely worth it. The estate wines have great fruit, the site wines are already juicy and have punch. Ultimately, we are very happy with how the vintage has developed so far.

2022

We started the harvest this year on the same day as in 2018 – August 27th. Back then it was earlier than ever before, and now it is the second year in a row.
2022 was actually a much too dry, warm year, but fortunately the drought did not affect our grapes as much as expected. Once again, our vines benefit from the barren soils, which force them to root deeply and thus access the water reserves and nutrients in the lower layers. By starting the harvest early, we were able to harvest all the grapes healthy, fully ripe, but still with moderate alcohol levels.

2021

Two consecutive vintages couldn't be much more different: 2021 comes after the warm, dry 2020 with cold spring temperatures, and on Easter Monday we were hit hard by frost. In the early areas, up to 80% of the small buds froze, slowing growth early in the year. In addition, there was an extremely wet early summer, which rapidly accelerated the spread of fungal diseases. What a challenging year.
Fortunately, the golden September and October seemed conciliatory and gave hope that at least the quality of the wines would be good.
From mid-September to the end of October, our large harvest team turned each grape over twice and meticulously selected them. The careful hand-picking paid off again this year when tasting the wines. The estate wines were fruity, juicy, with a present but well-integrated acidity, and the single-vineyard wines had a beautiful minerality and powerful lightness.

2020

Once again, in this year that was actually too dry and too warm, our vineyards benefited from the deep soils and the somewhat cooler and wetter influences from the directly adjacent Black Forest.
It was a vintage without any disruptive influences, which is something one rarely has.
Regular, if somewhat rare, thunderstorms, as well as no frost or hail ensured perfect grapes, the likes of which are rarely found in the cellar. Only the very high temperatures during the harvest and the resulting very rapid ripening process caused some stress in the end in order to harvest the grapes with a moderate alcohol content that met our requirements.
The quantity was also somewhat below average, but the wines already show incredible quality and will certainly develop magnificently in the coming months and years.

2019

The very warm year of 2018 was followed by a rather cool and wet spring in 2019, so that the soil was able to absorb sufficient water again and bud break was scheduled on average in mid-April.
From June onwards, however, summer really picked up speed and temperatures of around 40°C were measured for a few days in a row, causing significant sunburn damage to the grapes. We then had two hailstorms locally, meaning we lost around 30% of the harvest. Fortunately, it was dry again for a long time afterwards, so that the damaged berries dried up and we were able to eliminate them by carefully picking them by hand. Despite all the adversities of nature, we were able to press the wines we wanted through strict selection from the best harvest: stimulating, harmonious acidity with moderate sugar and therefore alcohol content. Only the small harvest somewhat mars the positive result of the vintage.

2018

What a year. Without wanting to overuse the term “vintage of the century,” 2018 was a very extraordinary year.
A normal bud break meant that a normal year could be expected without the risk of frost of the previous year. But from May onwards, every month was too warm and actually too dry, so that the vines' development progressed at a rapid pace. In the middle of the summer, memories of 2003 came back with the fear of harvesting similarly heavy and low-acid wines that were completely contrary to the spirit of the times.
With this in mind, we began harvesting on August 27th and were able to harvest our Grand Crus of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in the first week of harvest, ripe but still with a moderate alcohol content. The remaining Burgundies were also quickly harvested by our hard-working harvest team due to their outstanding health, meaning that all of the wines have an alcohol content of between 12 and 13.5 (even 10.5 for the Gutedel!)
Expected losses in quality due to the drought were completely refuted by the completely unexpected harvest volume, which indicates a good water supply, as well as by the first tastings of the young wines. This shows that the vine, as a deep-rooted plant, is a very favoured plant, especially in our deep limestone soils on the edge of the Black Forest.
The wines are already a lot of fun and will continue to delight in the years to come.

2017

After February and March had already sent the first signs of spring, meaning that the first small leaves were visible at the end of March, night frost on April 19 and 20 destroyed around 70% of the young shoots. The subsequent second shoots were able to at least partially compensate for this, meaning that we got off lightly with a harvest of around 2/3 of the long-term average yield. This was followed by a picture-perfect summer with long dry periods, which promoted grape development tremendously.
We started harvesting on September 4th earlier than ever before and from the second week of harvesting we had ideal harvest weather: 20°C during the day and dry and cool nights. Thanks to the immense effort of our experienced harvest workers to select the grapes in several passes, we were able to harvest ripe grapes.
And this work seems to have paid off. The first young wine samples are reconciling and even give cause for euphoria. Great fruit, powerful lightness and a lively but ripe acidity mean that great wines can be expected.

2016

After the very dry and warm 2015, nature has shown us once again this year that working in and with it is not a dream come true.
A very wet first half of the year caused enormous fungal pressure before and during flowering, which was difficult to counteract with our organic farming. Early on, we noticed failures in many vines and the uncertainty about the weather kept us on our toes. But after all of the previous year's rain had already fallen by mid-year, the weather changed and it hardly rained at all until September. This saved the vintage both quantitatively and qualitatively.
Wonderfully fresh white wines and incredibly dense reds ideally complement the previous vintage.

2015

The vintage actually started quite unremarkably. Normal bud break, moist, lukewarm spring.
But the summer will probably go down in Laufen’s annals as one of the warmest and, above all, driest.
Fortunately, the nights in August and September were a bit cooler again and a few thunderstorms brought a few litres of August rain, so that at least the slightly older vines did not show any growth deficits.
And the wines? Although they are somewhat more analytically powerful, they are extremely easy to drink and a great fun factor. This shows that nature often compensates for even seemingly difficult conditions and gives its fruits the greatest benefit and advantage for us.
